How Dogs Drink and Why It Matters

When my dog dives into his bowl, there is no doubt that water will cascade onto the floor. It appears to be a messy, haphazard method for quenching his thirst. Yet, these creatures are executing deliberate manoeuvres at remarkable speed. This allows them to secure the hydration they require when they are thirsty.

How dogs drink and why it matters

When crafting our products, it’s not just about making things tasty; it was about cracking the code on how our furry friends sip and slurp! 🐾🥤

Did you know?

Dogs and cats are cheeky little critters, but they’re missing a full set of cheeks! That’s right, they can’t create suction like we humans do when it’s time to drink.

Evolutionarily, a mostly cheekless design is beneficial for dogs, cats, and other predators. With less excess skin, they can bite and grip their prey more effectively, utilizing even their back teeth. As a result, our carnivorous pets need to lap their food rather than suck it.

So how do they actually drink?

Dogs drink water by curling their tongues backward and lapping it up. As they do this, their tongues move rapidly to generate momentum, which creates a column of water that is drawn up into their mouths. Put simply, their curled tongues allow them to drink more water!

When developing Oralade, we kept in mind how our pets drink, ensuring it was not only delicious but also easy to lap up! With a thicker texture than plain ol' water, Oralade allows for greater density to promote better oral retention and easier swallowing.

Ever had a battle with your furry friend over hydration? We get it! It’s all about that tantalizing taste, irresistible aroma, and, of course, the lap-worthy appeal. Let's get those tails wagging and encourage hydration from every angle with Oralade!
